New Opportunities

Modeling the Future Challenge
“Where are the statistics I’ve learned even used in the ‘real world’?” If you have ever asked (or been asked) this question, then the Modeling the Future Challenge is the opportunity to explore the answer. This free competition can be completed individually or in teams of up to five students over the course of three phases, as teams conduct an actuarial research project in which they make recommendations to organizations, government agencies, or other groups based on their own mathematical models, real-world data analysis, and risk management on a topic of their choosing.

Registration closes November 19.

Albert Einstein Distinguished Educator Fellowship Program
The Albert Einstein Distinguished Educator Fellowship Program is accepting applications. Information about eligibility, program benefits, and application requirements and access to the online application system can be found on the fellowship website.

The application deadline is November 13.

Modeling Contest and Data Insights Award
COMAP’s Mathematical Contest in Modeling is an international competition for high school and undergraduate students. The ASA provides the Data Insights Award for the MCM data insights problem C.

The registration deadline is January 29, 2026.

Stats&DataNet is a year-long professional learning effort organized by the Joint Committee of the American Statistical Association and National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. The program provides K–12 teachers with an opportunity to discuss and apply the data analysis, data science, and statistical concepts embodied in the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics Catalyzing Change books and American Statistical Association’s Guidelines for Assessment and Instruction in Statistics Education (GAISE) Pre-K–12 Curriculum Framework.

Register for the following webinars taking place from 6:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. ET:

  • November 4: Teaching Data and Statistics with Stata: Examples for the Classroom, led by Brooke Johnson, Kristin MacDonald, and Meghan Cain
  • February 10, 2026: Introduction to CODAP for Classroom Use, led by Tim Erickson

Free Data Science Professional Development Workshops from ThinkData Ed
Today’s students are surrounded by data, from the apps on their phones to the headlines they read. But most have never been taught how to make sense of it. That’s why ThinkData Ed is offering the following free virtual professional development workshops for teachers throughout the school year:

Statistics in Schools
The US Census Bureau’s Statistics in Schools program has plenty of great resources to get students excited about the spring and summer months. Their Fun Facts worksheets on topics such as Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Heritage Month and Fourth of July showcase data like the number of Asian-owned businesses and the populations of the first 13 states. Find more data relevant to these observances, along with classroom ideas for discussion in the accompanying teaching guides. The Monthly Highlights page can help you plan for future months and find creative ways to incorporate real-life data into your lessons.

What’s Going On in This Graph?
“What’s Going On in This Graph?” is a free, weekly online feature of the ASA and New York Times Learning Network. On Wednesdays from September through May, a new graph previously published in The New York Times is released. Graphs vary from week to week by topic, type of graph and level of difficulty. Students are asked to respond to three questions: What do you notice? What do you wonder? How does this relate to you and your community? Then, they’re asked to write a catchy headline that captures the main ideas of the graph. Students may respond online with statistics teachers replying from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. ET. By Friday, the free link to the original article, additional questions, and “Stat Nuggets”—definitions of statistical terms seen in the graphs and explanations for how they are used—are revealed. No statistical background is necessary for either teachers or students. All past releases plus galleries of graphs by topic and teacher support videos are posted on the homepage, in addition to archives of the more than 150 previously released graphs by topic and of the more than 140 Stat Nuggets.

Sign up for a free one-year trial membership for K–12 teachers and two-year college faculty. Also, free resources are available for K–12 educators and students and two-year college faculty.

NCTM Resources
To elevate the standards of mathematics education offered around the world, NCTM provides the math community with education resources, professional development opportunities, and more. Their journal Mathematics Teacher: Learning and Teaching PK–12 features various mathematical topics, including statistics.

STEW Lessons
STatistics Education Web is a free, online resource for peer-reviewed statistics lesson plans.

Census at School
The ASA’s Census at School program is a free international classroom project that engages students in grades 4–12 in statistical problem solving using their own real data. The students complete an online survey, analyze their class census results, and compare their class with random samples of students in the United States and other participating countries. There are free lessons using Census at School data posted under Resources.

Stats + Stories
This podcast is a partnership of the ASA and Stats + Stories group at Miami University—a collaboration between statisticians and journalists—to produce podcasts that give the statistics behind the stories and the stories behind the statistics.
