Editor’s Note: Fall 2023
Jessica Cohen, a professor at Western Washington University and Statistics Teacher article editor for the past six years, ends her tenure with this issue. In her place, Trena Wilkerson of Baylor University and Jennifer Green of Michigan State University will come aboard as co-editors starting with the winter issue.
Trena is past president of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics and a mathematics education professor in the department of curriculum and instruction at Baylor. Previously, she was a high-school teacher for 18 years. In her spare time, she enjoys reading, visiting quiet places, and playing the piano. Her favorite movie genres are sci-fi and action and, living in Texas, she is always on the hunt for great BBQ.
I am looking forward to working with the Statistics Teacher team to support Pre-K–12 teachers in teaching statistics. It is exciting to explore the potential of statistics education and share powerful learning opportunities that teachers are engaging students in. … Statistics Teacher is a great resource to support teachers and have them share their ideas and a space to work together.
Jennifer is an associate professor of statistics education. Her research aims to improve STEM education with an emphasis on statistics, informing and enhancing the processes of teaching, learning, and assessment across all levels of education. She investigates the teaching and learning of statistics through the development and refinement of programs for K–16 practitioners. When Jennifer is not working, she loves being outdoors, hiking, skiing, and experiencing the “lake life” in Michigan. She also likes exploring new places, eating tasty food, and engaging in all things creative with her two daughters, ages 17 and 11.
I’m thrilled to join the Statistics Teacher team with Trena as co-editor. There are so many exciting ways in which teachers and students are engaging with statistics, and this journal offers a great space for sharing that work with others and considering new possibilities.
In addition to Trena and Jennifer, Charlotte Bolch—associate director of the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs at Midwestern University—will come on board with the winter issue to serve as STEW/ST lesson plan co-editor with Catherine Case of the University of Georgia, who has been the lesson plan editor since 2019.
Charlotte completed her PhD in statistics education at the University of Florida and MS in biostatistics at the University of Minnesota. She has been an AP Statistics reader for several years and enjoys attending statistics education–focused conferences. She is an active member of the American Statistical Association, including serving as a blog editor for the Section on Teaching of Statistics in the Health Sciences and executive committee member at-large for the Statistical Consulting Section.
I am excited to be the STEW co-editor with Catherine. Statistical literacy is such an important skill for everyone! Finding interactive and engaging activities to get students excited about learning statistical skills is one of my favorite parts about being an instructor.
We are thankful to have Catherine, Charlotte, Jenny, and Trena serving in these editorial roles.
