High School Mathematics Reimagined, Revitalized, and Relevant
NCTM has released High School Mathematics Reimagined, Revitalized, and Relevant, a new vision for high school mathematics that empowers students through engaging, real-world learning. It reimagines the curriculum to focus on student-centered inquiry, revitalizing teaching practices, and ensuring mathematics is relevant for today’s world, including promoting the importance of mathematical and statistical modeling.

What’s Going On in This Graph?
“What’s Going On in This Graph?” is a free, weekly online feature of the ASA and New York Times Learning Network. On Wednesdays from September through May, a new graph previously published in The New York Times is released. Graphs vary from week to week by topic, type of graph, and level of difficulty. Students are asked to respond to three questions: What do you notice? What do you wonder? How does this relate to you and your community? Then, they’re asked to write a catchy headline that captures the main ideas of the graph. Students may respond online with statistics teachers replying from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. ET. By Friday, the free link to the original article, additional questions, and “Stat Nuggets”—definitions of statistical terms seen in the graphs and explanations for how they are used—are revealed. No statistical background is necessary for either teachers or students. View all past releases, galleries of graphs by topic, and teacher support videos.

NCTM Resources
To elevate the standards of mathematics education offered around the world, NCTM provides the math community with educational resources and professional development opportunities. Their journal Mathematics Teacher: Learning and Teaching PK–12 features various mathematical topics, including statistics. In one article, the authors take a deeper look into the Pre-K–12 Guidelines for Assessment and Instruction in Statistics Education II (GAISE II): A Framework for Statistics and Data Science Education report.

Census Bureau Data for the Classroom
The US Census Bureau’s Statistics in Schools program offers resources to help boost students’ statistical literacy while bringing real-life data into the classroom. Quiz students about the population of festive-named places and more with their competitive Kahoot! games for the fall and winter seasons. Their Fun Facts handouts on observances such as Native American Heritage Month, Thanksgiving, and the Holiday Season showcase data from the population of towns named after turkey and cranberries to the number of imports of holiday decorations. There are also warm-up activities and standards-based activities in subjects including math, history, sociology, geography, and English. Stay up-to-date on offerings with the Monthly Highlights page.
